When it comes to traveling by airlines, there are various rules, regulations, and restrictions for carrying different items. Categories of different items are different such as banned items, restricted items, or dangerous items. Such rules are made for the safety of passengers only.

Exceptions are everywhere. Similarly, this field has exceptions too as there are several items that are allowed for the passengers to carry while they travel.

These items include perfumes, beverages, medicines, etc. but in a prescribed quantity only.

There are various items that are considered as ‘prohibited items in checked baggage’ while some items are not even allowed to carry in carry-on luggage.

Here is the list of some of Air India restricted items that are accepted from the provision of the rules. Either they are accepted in a limited quantity or they are completely banned.

  • Dry ice

If you are carrying dry ice, you are not allowed to carry more than 5 pounds (2 kg) of it. Dry ice is not allowed to carry as checked-in baggage. However, it is allowed to carry as carry-on baggage.

  • Ammunition

You have to pay 100 USD per firearm and/or 50 cartridges to Air India in such a case.

  • Alcohol beverages

You are allowed to carry not more than 5 liters of alcohol in Air India.

  • Musical instruments

If you want to carry music instruments as Cabin Baggages, it will not be possible for you to do so because they are restricted.

However, you can carry musical instruments as part of checked-in baggage. In case, if you are carrying excess baggage, you have to pay extra charges for that.

  • Power banks

Power banks are only allowed to carry as Hand Baggage. You cannot carry them as Checked-in baggage.

  • Lithium-Ion batteries

Batteries are allowed to carry in Air India but conditions are applicable too. These batteries are allowed to be carried as carry-on baggage only.

For lithium-ion batteries, the rating of Watt-Hour must not be more than 100Wh. For lithium metal, the content should not be more than 2g.

  • Sharp objects

Sharp objects are not allowed to be carried as hand baggage. Such items include ice axes, box cutters, meat cleavers, knives, razor-type blades, utility knives, sabres, safety razors, swords, etc.

  • Sporting goods

Bows and arrows, baseball bats, golf clubs, cricket bats, pool cues, hockey sticks, spear guns, ski poles, etc are some of the sporting goods that are restricted to be carried as hand baggage.

  • Guns and firearm

Compressed air guns, ammunition, starter pistols, firearms and their parts, parts of guns, etc are some dangerous items that are prohibited in Air India as hand baggage.

  • Tools

Crowbars, axes and hatches, drills, hammers, saws, tools, screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches are some of the tools that are not allowed to carry as hand baggage in Air India flights.

  • Personal items

Scissors, lighters, realistic replicas of top weapons, etc are some of the categories of personal items that are not allowed to carry as hand baggage.

  • Martial arts/self-defense items

Martial art weapons, mace and pepper spray, nunchakus, nightsticks, stun guns, self-defense items, shocking devices, etc are also not allowed on Air India as hand baggage.

Butane, liquid nitrogen, oxygen, aqualung cylinders, (deeply refrigerated, poisonous, flammable, non-flammable) etc are some of the types of compressed gas that are not allowed to be carried in Air India plane as check-in baggage.

  • Corrosives

Acids, wet cell batteries, mercury, alkalis, drain cleaners and many other types of corrosives are also prohibited on the plane.

  • Flammable items

Lighter fluid, gasoline, aerosol, fuels (including cooking fuels and any flammable liquid fuel), gas torches, paint thinner, turpentine, petrol, diesel, and other types of flammable items are restricted on Air India as check-in baggage.

  • Poisonous and infectious substances

Weed killers, insecticides, and other poisonous items are also prohibited.

  • Oxidizing materials

Oxidizing materials such as peroxides and bleaching powders are not allowed to be carried on Air India as check-in baggage.

  • Other dangerous items

You can not even carry irritating or offensive materials, magnetized items, briefcases that contain installed alarming devices, etc on your flight as check-in baggage.

  • Are food items allowed in the hand luggage?

Passengers are not to carry several foods items. Everything is limited. You cannot carry such foods that are in the liquid state such as pastes, sauces, stews, soups, etc.

However, you can carry some vegetables, fruits, and other solid edibles in your hand baggage.

In case, if you want to carry any liquid item, you have to put it into a container whose size must not be more than 3.4 ounces i.e., 100 ml, regardless of the amount inside the container.

  • Is there any restriction for taking a knife on a plane in checked baggage?

If you want to carry knives on any of the Air India flights then according to the TSA, you should pack it very carefully in your checked baggage.

The blades of the knives must be wrapped completely in your luggage so that the security officers and luggage handlers do not get hurt by the knives.

If you are carrying a lighter on the plane, it must be kept only in the DOT-approved containers.

Economy class passengers of Air India are allowed to check in with 25 kg on domestic flights.

The total dimensions of hand baggage on Air India flights must not increase 115 cm. It can be divided into (22 inches x 14 inches x 10 inches) or  (55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm).
