All You Must Know About American Airlines (Baggage Policy & Restricted Items)

According to the American Airlines official website, travelers can fly anywhere from the Virgin Islands to India through the airlines. While traveling, people carry their baggage with them, which is divided into two categories- carry-on luggage and checked-in baggage.

Every airline has some rules and restrictions regarding the baggage a person is carrying.

List of items you can/cannot carry inside the plane.

• Alcoholic beverages that are more than 70 per cent by volume are neither allowed as checked-in baggage nor as carry-on baggage on the airline. Drinks over 140 proof come under such alcohols.
• Alcoholic beverages that are less than 70 per cent by volume are not allowed as carry-on baggage. However, you can take them inside the flight as checked-in baggage.

Some rules must be followed if you are carrying such beverages as checked-in baggage. You are not allowed to take open or re-closed containers. Per passenger will be allowed to carry not more than 5 litres of alcohol.

The content of alcohol must be between 24 per cent to 70 per cent. Such beverages may include wine, beer or other alcoholic beverages.

• You can take batteries with you inside the plane both as checked-in and carry-on baggage. Such cells may include Silver oxide, Lithium, Alkaline, Lithium-ion, etc. However, you have to follow some rules-

You can take as many batteries you want if they are less than 100 Wh. If they are between 100 to 160 Wh, you can only take two of them in carry-on baggage.

If they exceed 160 Wh, you have to contact special assistance in order to bypass them.

• Cutting instruments are not allowed inside the plane as carry-on baggage. But you can keep them in your checked-in baggage. These instruments may be straight razors, metal knives, or box cutters. If you want to keep them in your carry-on baggage, you can carry safety razors or plastic cutlery.
• You are not allowed to bring defence sprays such as tear gas, mace, pepper spray, etc with you. These items can neither be carried as checked-in baggage nor as carry-on baggage.
• You can keep dry ice in your checked-in baggage and carry-on baggage as well. But the limit must not increase 2.5 kg if carried in carry-on baggage. Moreover, you have to make sure that the dry ice is packed suitably in heavy gauge containers or hard plastic.
• Explosives are neither allowed as carry-on baggage nor checked-in baggage. These may include flare guns, gunpowder flares, fireworks, etc.
• You are allowed to carry firearms in checked-in baggage, but you cannot take them inside the plane as carry-on baggage. These may include rifles, handguns, ammunition, shotguns, etc. The items must be properly packed in wood or fibre. They must not increase 5 kg of weight.
• Flammable liquids are not allowed inside the plane. You cannot take them either as checked-in or carry-on baggage. These may include paints, fuels, gas torches, etc.
• You may take gasoline-powered tools with you on your flight under checked-in baggage, but you cannot carry them as carry-on baggage. Such devices include chainsaws, gas-powered trimmers, etc. you have to make sure that the tools must be in their original packing.
• You cannot take household items such as spray starch, bleach, aerosols, insecticides, etc with you inside the plane.
• Hoverboards such as balance wheels, small electric scooters, etc are also not allowed inside the airline.
• Lighters, matches, grill lighters, etc are allowed to be carried inside the plane as carry-on baggage, but you cannot keep them in your checked-in baggage. However, torch lighters and lighter fluids are not allowed.
• You are not allowed to carry mobility devices such as electric wheelchairs inside the plane. If you wish to take them anyhow, you have to send advance notice to the airlines.
• You are allowed to bring personal care items such as hair spray, deodorants, nail polish, etc inside the plane both as checked-in and carry-on baggage. These items must be packed in clear plastic bags. The weight limit is 70 ounces.
• You cannot take scissors and other similar tools inside the plane as carry-on baggage. However, you may take them as checked-in baggage. These items may include screwdrivers, metal scissors, wrenches, etc. if you are carrying a metal scissor, its cutting edge must not be more than 4 inches. The same for wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers must not increase 7 inches.

Carry-on baggage allowance in American Airlines

If you are traveling in an economy class, basic economy, or higher, then you are allowed to carry an item having dimensions 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm).

You can also carry one personal bag whose dimensions are 18 x 14 x 8 in (45 x 35 x 20 cm). However, there is no restriction on the weight limit.

Moreover, you can also carry other items such as a nappy bag or medical devices on board.

If you are traveling with infants, you are allowed to bring a soft-sided cooler bag for breast milk and one diaper bag per infant along with your carry-on baggage.

If you are willing to bring a musical instrument with your carry-on baggage, you have to make sure that it fits either under the seat in front or in the overhead locker.

Moreover, the weight of the musical instrument must not increase by 75 kg. In case, the item does not fit on the plane; you can buy an extra seat next to you for keeping that instrument.

If you want to bring a pet on the flight, it must be kept in a carrier and must be able to sit, turn around, stand up, and lie down in a natural position in the carrier.

However, pets are allowed on certain flights only. You have to pay a fee of $125 for carrying a pet.

Checked-in baggage allowance in American Airlines

On domestic flights, passengers traveling in Economy/ Basic Economy class are allowed to carry check baggage of not more than 23 kg of weight. The dimensions of the bag must not increase by 158 cm.

You have to pay a total of $30 for the first bag, $40 for the second, $150 for the third, and $200 for any additional bags.

On transatlantic flights, if you have a standard economy ticket, you are allowed to carry one bag, and you will be charged nothing for that. The total dimensions of the ba must not increase by 158 cm, and the weight limit for the bag is 23 kg.

The cost for the first additional bag is $100, and any further extra bag will be charged $200. If you are a basic economy passenger, you have to pay $60 for the first bag.

If you are a business or first-class passenger, you are allowed to carry bags as checked-in baggage up to 32 kg.
